Everyone knows Prime Day is the perfect time to upgrade your Amazon tech, and this year is no exception.
The Echo Dot (5th generation) is now available for £29.99 down from £54.99. That means it is currently £25 off and 45% cheaper than its standard price for Prime members, making this one of the cleaner Prime Day decisions in the smart home category.

The audio has been improved over previous generations, with clearer vocals and deeper bass from the 1.73-inch front-firing speaker, so while it won’t replace a dedicated wireless speaker, it fills a room well enough for background listening, podcasts, and audiobooks from Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon Music, and Audible.
That listening extends to voice control over the whole session, with Alexa handling playback, timers, reminders, and weather updates without needing you to touch anything, which compounds over time into a genuinely different relationship with the room the Echo Dot sits in.

For homes already running smart devices, the Echo Dot connects with compatible lights, plugs, thermostats, and locks via Wi-Fi, Bluetooth Low Energy, and Matter, and can trigger routines automatically based on time, temperature, or motion detected by its built-in sensor.
The eero Built-in feature can also extend an existing eero Wi-Fi network without additional hardware, adding up to 92 square metres of coverage and speeds up to 100 Mbps when used alongside a compatible eero router.
Pair two Echo Dots together for stereo sound across rooms, or connect one to a compatible Fire TV to create an Alexa Home Cinema setup, and the hardware includes a physical Microphone Off button that electronically disconnects the microphones when privacy matters more than convenience.
The 5th generation is for anyone who has been putting off the jump into smart home audio; £29.99 is the kind of price that removes most of the remaining reasons to wait.

An audio upgrade on the previous model, the Amazon Echo Dot (5th generation) is now a capable music speaker, as well as a great smart speaker for smart home control and general enquiries. Overall, this is the best value smart speaker you can buy, although owners of the previous generation will struggle to justify the upgrade.
