Google Pixel 10 Pro vs Pixel 10 Pro XL: Is there much of a difference?

Like the 2024 Pixel series, Google’s latest Pixel 10 line-up includes both a Pro and a Pro XL model.

It’s not just a bigger size that differentiates the Google Pixel 10 Pro XL from the Pixel 10 Pro. In fact, there are numerous differences that could factor in when deciding between the handsets.

Price and Availability

Both handsets are currently available for pre-order, ready for their official launch on August 28. 

The Pixel 10 Pro is the cheaper of the two, with a starting RRP of £999/$999 for the 128GB handset.

Google Pixel 10 Pro XL is larger and heavier

Let’s get the most obvious difference out of the way. As its name suggests, the Pixel 10 Pro XL is much bigger than the Pixel 10 Pro. While the Pixel 10 Pro’s display is just 6.3-inches, the same as the entry-level Pixel 10, the XL is 6.8-inches.

Whether you prefer a larger display or not really depends on your own usage. If you play mobile games or use your phone to watch videos, then a considerably larger screen makes more sense.

Either way, both are Super Actua, LTPO-enabled displays with up to 3300 nits peak brightness too. This is unchanged from the Pixel 9 Pro series, which we hailed as offering a vibrant, crisp and detailed picture while “easily giving some of the best screens from Apple and Samsung a run for their money.”

Otherwise, the Pixel 10 Pro XL is slightly heavier at 232g compared to the Pixel 10 Pro’s 207g. Although it’s worth noting that surprisingly, the Pixel 10 Pro XL is actually very slightly thinner at 8.5mm whereas the Pixel 10 Pro is 8.6mm. It’s negligible, but a difference nonetheless. 

Google Pixel 10 Pro XL has a larger battery

Perhaps unsurprisingly, as the Pixel 10 Pro XL is a larger handset it naturally boasts more space for a bigger battery too. Even so, at 5200mAh the Pixel 10 Pro XL’s capacity is pretty average and even considered small when compared to the likes of the OnePlus 13’s 6000mAh. 

In comparison, the Pixel 10 Pro actually has a smaller than average battery capacity at just 4870mAh. Considering most of the best cheap phones have at least a 5000mAh, with even the Poco X7 Pro sporting an impressive 6000mAh, this feels pretty low for the £999/$999 handset.

Even so, Google promises that both the Pixel 10 Pro and Pixel 10 Pro XL offer over 30 hours of battery life, or over 100 when Extreme Battery Saver is enabled. We’ll have to wait until we review either handset to confirm Google’s claims, but they definitely sound impressive.

What really highlights the difference in the two handset’s respective batteries is with charging speeds. Before we start, it’s worth remembering that Google has never offered particularly fast charging speeds, especially when compared to other handsets such as the OnePlus 13 or even the Asus Rog 9 Pro.

Despite that, Google claims the Pixel 10 Pro XL can reach up to 70% of battery life in just 30 minutes, while the Pixel 10 Pro should see around 50% charge in the same period of time. This is because the Pixel 10 Pro supports speeds of up to 30W, when paired with a compatible charger, while the Pixel 10 Pro XL supports up to 45W instead.

Not only that, but both handsets are also equipped with Pixelsnap technology, which supports speedy Qi2 wireless charging. While the majority of the Pixel 10 series can see wireless charging speeds of up to 15W, the Pixel 10 Pro XL boasts support for up to 25W for much faster top-ups.

Both run on Google’s Tensor G5 chip

Unlike many other flagship phone series, all phones in the Pixel 10 series benefit from Google’s Tensor G5 processor. The chip, which Google explains is designed for the Gemini era, favours AI capabilities over power, which means we’ll likely see low benchmark scores, especially when compared to other flagship chips like the mighty Snapdragon 8 Elite.

Even so, previous Pixel handsets, like last year’s Pixel 9 Pro and Pixel 9 Pro XL, all performed well in everyday tasks and we rarely noticed any stutter either. 

Not only that but Google explains that alongside its AI support, Tensor G5 boasts a custom Imagine Signal Processor (ISP), which the brand promises should deliver “Pixel’s best image and video quality yet.”

Considering Pixel handsets are repeatedly hailed as being among the best camera phones, this is a promising upgrade in, not just the Pixel 10 Pro and Pixel 10 Pro XL, but the entire series. 

Both have a Pro triple rear camera system

It’s worth noting that the camera hardware of the Pixel 10 Pro and Pixel 10 Pro XL are not only the same but also remain relatively unchanged from last year’s iterations, bar from a few tweaks. However, remember Google has stated the Tensor G5 chip’s ISP should offer the best image and video quality yet, so we should see an improvement.

Even so, both the Pixel 10 Pro and Pixel 10 Pro XL are made up of a Pro triple rear camera system which includes a 50MP wide, 48MP ultrawide and 48MP 5x telephoto lens. Plus, you can get up to 100x closer, thanks to Pro Res Zoom too. 

In fact, Google has demonstrated the Pro Res Zoom ability. In the first image, we see a rocky environment, where a road is hardly noticeable at 0.5x zoom. However, when the demonstration zooms up to 100x, we see a surprisingly clear image of a car on the once easily missed road.

Hardware aside, both the Pixel 10 Pro and Pro XL benefit from the inclusion of camera-related AI tools too. Alongside Pixel’s iconic photo and video editing suite, both handsets are also equipped with Camera Coach. The Gemini-powered tool is built into the entire Pixel 10 series, and offers suggestions on angles, lighting and even shooting modes, based entirely on the scene you’re capturing. 

Finally, the two handsets also improve on old Pixel favourites, like Add Me and Best Take too. 

Both support Google’s AI tools

Regardless of whether you opt for the entry-level Pixel 10 or even the expensive Pixel 10 Pro Fold, you’ll benefit from Google’s plethora of AI tools, thanks to the Tensor G5 processor. 

The toolkit is vast, with the likes of Circle to Search, Pixel Screenshots and, of course, built-in Gemini too. There’s also useful everyday tools like Call Screen, which uses AI to deal with spam calls on your behalf, plus Live Translation for when you’re abroad. 

Alongside these, the Pixel 10 series introduces a few new tools. Alongside Camera Coach, which we touched upon earlier, there’s Magic Cue which suggests relevant actions based on what you’re doing on your phone at that time. Google explains that if you call your airline, Magic Cue will automatically find your upcoming flight details, so they’re ready for when the company picks up.

Early Verdict

With both fitted with a Pro triple camera system and running on Google’s Tensor G5 processor, it’s a difficult choice between the Google Pixel 10 Pro and Pixel 10 Pro XL. However, if you want a smaller and lighter handset and don’t mind losing some battery capacity in the process, then the Pixel 10 Pro is a better choice.

On the other hand, if you prefer a larger phone and want the very top-end of Google’s Pixel lineup, without splurging on the Pixel 10 Pro Fold, then the Pixel 10 Pro XL is an easy win.
