We test each robot lawn mower as our main mower. We start by testing how easy the mower is to set up and configure, whether that’s by installing boundary wire or, more commonly, using GPS.
To test out cutting performance, we run each mower for multiple weeks. We see how evenly they cut the grass, and if there are any areas they skip or avoid.
For navigation, we see if each mower can cope with uneven areas, noting any issues, such as wheels getting stuck; and we see how well each mower does avoiding obstacles.
We also test how easy any apps are to use for configuration, running and scheduling.

The Husqvarna AutoMower 305E Nera is the first GPS-powered robot lawn mower that we’ve tested that doesn’t need a reference station. With the EPOS Plug-in module installed and, provided you have Wi-Fi coverage over your garden, this robot can use the internet for GPS correction data.
For more accurate positioning you can use a reference station, and the robot can work with boundary wire, too. Overall, that makes this the most flexible robot that we’ve ever set up.
Motorised cutting height adjustment is good to see, letting us reduce the cutting height over a season to get the perfect cut.
It’s the EdgeCut system that sets this robot apart. With a smaller cutting deck at the front, the Husqvarna AutoMower 305E Nera can swing round at a boundary, cutting pretty much right to the edge.
We found that we had to manually tweak the map to get EdgeCut to work; once done, the system worked brilliantly, and we didn’t have to cut the trimmer out very often.
Navigation is excellent, with the mower covering our lawn brilliantly, and dealing with divots and uneven ground. With no camera on the front, obstacle avoidance wasn’t so good, so clear the lawn of balls, hoses and the like before starting.
An excellent app with simple scheduling, or one-off runs, makes this mower easy to use.
This mower is a brilliant choice if you want a brilliant cut and the easiest set-up.

We’re generally fans of Stihl’s range of power tools and the iMow 7 is certainly no exception. Designed for large gardens up to 5000m², the iMow 7 is not only powerful and able to cut lawns perfectly but it’s clever and can detect large objects and when conditions aren’t good for mowing.
The iMow 7 relies on a boundary wire to work, which annoyingly costs extra. This can either be set-up yourself by following the guidelines, or it can be installed by a Stihl professional which is a better option if you have a complicated garden layout.
This version has Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connection for controlling the robot but, unlike other robot lawn mowers, it doesn’t come with a SIM slot. Whether this is an issue or not depends on your Wi-Fi network and how far into your garden it reaches. If your Wi-Fi is patchy then you’ll need to upgrade to the Evo version which costs a whopping £500 extra.
While the iMow 7 can handle slopes of up to 40%, if you do have tougher terrain then it’s recommended that you upgrade to the Evo version as this extends the gradient to a massive 60%.
The standard iMow 7 leaves the robot exposed to the elements but there is an optional sun canopy to protect it from heat, dirt and UV which is a worthwhile purchase if the mower is in direct sunlight.
Although there are basic controls on the robot itself, the majority of operation comes via the easy-to-use iMow app. Once you’ve input your garden size into the app, a default schedule will be created although this can be adjusted to suit your schedule or cancelled entirely if you’d prefer to send the iMow 7 out manually to work.
The iMow 7 has a cutting deck that has three spinning blades and provides a cutting width of 28cm which can cover a lot of area quickly. It is also fitted with ultrasonic sensors that allow the robot to detect and slow down towards larger objects.
Even so, it’s worth noting that you should keep the lawn clear of small objects such as tools, cables and toys to avoid any issues.
If you have a large garden then the iMow 7 is a reliable and powerful robot lawn mower option. Just remember there are a few both compulsory and optional extras that need to be factored into the already high cost.

Available in three options to suit different sized-gardens, the Mammotion Luba 2 AWD is a true powerhouse of a robot lawn mower that boasts an all-wheel drive system and a 400m cutting width that’s the same as a regular lawn mower.
Regardless of whether you opt for the 1000m², 3000m² or 5000m² version, the Mammotion Luba 2 AWD weighs a massive 17kg so it might require a couple of people to get it set up.
The reason it’s so large is partly due to its 400m cutting width which means the robot can cover a large area quickly. The robot is also fitted with omni-wheels at the front to help it handle slopes of up to 45% and maximum climbs of a whopping 80%, which is one of the best we’ve ever seen, and means any dips or hills in your garden can be tackled with ease.
We did find the Mammotion Luba 2 AWD was quite tricky to set up, as it first requires a few maintenance jobs, including installing the 3D Vision camera and front bumper.
You will then need to download the accompanying app to create a map of your garden and, in lieu of automatic boundary recognition, you’ll need to manually steer the robot to do this. Once this is done you can add up to 10 zones and no-go zones too.
Although the robot does have on-device controls, including a start and stop button, the app is necessary for offering more options, such as a choice of grass-pattern cut, including zig-zag or even chessboard, adjusting obstacle detection mode, and scheduling settings. You can even view the live video feed, which allows you to watch the mower’s progress in real time.
Overall, we found the Mammotion Luba 2 AWD’s navigation and performance to be among the best, able to make short work of cutting grass and adhering to boundary cutting restrictions too.

If your garden or front lawn happens to have a sizeable slope or even raised areas that make it difficult to mow, then the Sunseeker Elite X5 is most certainly the best option you can go for right now. This is a robot lawn mower that is designed specifically for uneven terrain.
The reason why the Elite X5 is so well equipped to handle difficult terrain is two-fold: its all-wheel design and the use of intelligent AI-powered obstacle avoidance. On the former, unlike a lot of its competitors, the Elite X5 features a third wheel for more stable movement, preventing the device from being toppled over.
When it comes to navigating your garden, the X5 uses an antenna-based GPS system to ensure that every area that needs a trim is seen to, but what sets it apart is the use of 3D binocular cameras that rely on machine learning. This allows the X5 to gain a better understanding of how to tackle your garden as it goes, so that the next cut is even more efficient.
You don’t even have to worry about coverage if you’re lucky enough to have a larger garden, as the X5 can cover a space of up to 2000m² without issue.
Even if you’re completely new to robot vacuums, the Elite X5 is still easy to set up via the intuitive app, wherein you can also set no-go zones within your garden for the device to avoid. You can also set up to eight mowing areas, with distinct power settings to get the precise length of cut that you prefer.

For those of you who simply cannot stand the idea of having to set up boundary wires for your robot lawn mower to get to work, the Eufy Lawnbot E15 is made with you in mind. With this compact mower, there isn’t a boundary wire or antenna in sight.
The way in which the Lawnbot E15 can achieve this is two-fold: 4G/Wi-Fi connectivity for independent travel, and AI-infused cameras that can identify anything the device needs to avoid as it goes about tidying up your garden. In fact, when you first set up the E15, it’s capable of mapping your garden automatically, so there’s very little effort required on your part.
If you want to get more involved with the comings and goings of the lawn mower, then you can do that in the accompanying Eufy app. You can set no-go zones, which is helpful if there are more delicate areas that require a manual touch, as well as must-go zones, which are then treated as high priority.
When we put the E15 to the test, what impressed us the most was to see how well the obstacle avoidance software was able to analyse the area at hand and address any issues.
Depending on the type of grass you need to cut, there’s a decent amount of customisation available via the aforementioned app. The cutting height can be tweaked to be between 25 and 75mm, and you even have control over the blade and travel speeds, if you really want to dive into the details.

At just £499.99, the LawnMaster OcuMow 18 is remarkable value for a robot lawn mower.
It’s also one of the simplest to get started with. Rather than using boundary wire or GPS for navigation, this robot lawn mower uses its grass-detection camera and ultrasonic sensors to spot boundaries and avoid them automatically.
You need areas with good contrast or physical boundaries, such as lawn edging strips, but the LawnMaster OcuMow 18 is impressive: it ran around our test garden neatly avoiding our plants and sticking to the lawn.
If you do have areas you want to cut off, you can put down the provided magnetic strip to stop the mower from entering an area. Even so, we recommend a GPS- or boundary wire-powered robot for gardens with more complicated layouts.
A simple charging station is provided, and needs to be placed somewhere with good GPS coverage, so that the robot can find its way home when it’s time to charge. We found that our robot took a few goes to dock neatly, but it always managed it in the end.
Ultrasonic sensors let the LawnMaster OcuMow 18 avoid bigger obstacles, such as chairs and people. General navigation is good, although a divot caused the robot to spin its wheels, and we found that this robot didn’t get that close to the edge.
Main grass cutting is good, and it’s good that cutting height can be manually adjusted between 20mm and 80mm.
Configuring schedules is fiddly, as there’s no app and just a small LCD screen and control dial for all settings. That said, you only need to configure this robot once.
For simple, small gardens, this drop-and-go robot lawn mower is cheap and works well.

If you have a small and flat garden and want a no-fuss robot lawn mower, then the Sunseek V3 robot lawn mower is a brilliant option, as it can be set up in a matter of minutes.
Rather than using GPS, the Sunseeker V3 is fitted with dual cameras at its front which are used to navigate the lawn, spot borders and can avoid over 160 obstacles (including plants). The cameras also sport a little windscreen wiper which clears debris away, which is a useful touch considering the cameras are required for the lawnmower to do its job.
Perhaps unsurprisingly, controlling the Sunseeker V3 is done via a smartphone app that connects via Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. Remember, there’s no mobile connection here, so if you have a larger garden with patchy Wi-Fi then you’ll need to look elsewhere. The app is exceptionally simple to use, with the option to begin a cut simply by hitting the Start button. However, it’s still fitted with extra options including edge cutting, scheduling and rain delay too.
Overall we found that the Sunseeker V3 did a brilliant job at navigating across the lawn, however it did struggle slightly when hitting some dips. Even so, we were impressed with how it tried to recover from such terrain.
There’s only manual cutting height adjustment on the V3, with options for cutting heights between 20mm and 60mm in 5mm increments. That gives you plenty of choice depending on your preference.
If you have a smaller or more simple garden and just want an easy-to-use robot lawn mower that works well, then the Sunseeker V3 is a brilliant choice. However, those with larger or more complicated garden set-ups should look elsewhere.

Although it does require a slightly more set-up compared to the Sunseeker V3, the Mammotion Yuka Mini 800 is a brilliant, budget-friendly robot lawn mower that works well at keeping your lawn looking neat.
However, unlike the company’s Luba 2 AWD, the Yuka Mini 800 only has two-wheel drive which means it’s not a good option for gardens with lots of bumps and dips. Instead, it’s better for gardens that are relatively flat with a simple layout.
The reason the Yuka Mini 800 needs more set-up compared to the Sunseeker V3 is because it uses GPS for positioning rather than relying on vision only. Even so, it’s still a fairly uncomplicated process, and is done via the app which includes plenty of videos to make the process easier.
Also unlike the V3, the Yuka Mini 800 allows you to map out your garden, and there are two ways to do this. For basic lawn shapes, you can simply let the Mini 800 use its cameras and RTK connection and set it to auto-map. However, for more complex lawns, you can use the app to manually drive the robot around the edge of the lawn, setting no-go areas and channels between sections as you go. Essentially, it turns the Mini 800 into a remote control car, which is undeniably fun.
A nice touch is that the on-board cameras can double as a mobile security camera that’s viewable from anywhere with an internet connection.
Otherwise, the Yuka Mini 800 cuts grass from 20 to 60mm, although this is set by the dial on top of the mower rather than via the app. However, the app does allow you to set customisable options for mowing patterns, which all manages to cut neatly while avoiding any obstacles.

For more challenging garden terrains, whether uneven or sloped, the Mammotion Luba Mini AWD 800 is an easy recommendation, thanks to its rugged design and four-wheel drive. Plus, with its brilliant built-in cameras and RTK navigation system, the undeniably high price is easily justified.
Although it’s rugged, it’s worth noting that the Luba Mini AWD 800 is designed for gardens up to 800m2.
The main reason to opt for the Luba Mini AWD 800 is the four wheel drive, which we found enabled the robot to handle uneven terrain with absolute ease.
Setting up the robot itself wasn’t too much of a challenge, as it comes with paper instructions and an easy-to-follow guide on the smartphone app. You can operate the robot either via Wi-Fi (which is the easiest way) or via on-board 4G which is available via a subscription service.
However, the hardest job is setting up the RTK station as it needs clear skies to get a good signal, and getting this right can be difficult if you have overhanging trees or aerial obstructions.
Otherwise, once you are set up, you can let the Luba find its own way around the garden with automatic mapping or, like the Yuka Mini 800, you can manually drive it around like a remote control car, creating a map and setting no-go zones as you go, which is not only accurate but even somewhat enjoyable.
When you’ve successfully mapped the garden, the Luba Mini AWD 800 can be left to work its magic. You can adjust its cutting length (between 20mm and 65mm) via the app, with the level of customisation available some of the best we’ve seen from a robot lawn mower.
Thanks to its off-road capabilities and brilliant cutting, the mower was able to navigate well through the garden, without bumping into obstacles, and leave the grass evenly cut.

Although robot lawn mowers are automated, regular maintenance is recommended to ensure they perform at their best. Before getting started, ensure the robot is switched off and you’re wearing protective gloves to keep your hands safe.
Turn the mower upside down and remove any large clumps of clippings and any leaves or sticks that are trapped in the device. While you’re here, check the blades to ensure they are intact and any discs are spinning freely. If not, then these should be replaced. For a more general clean, use a damp cloth and a soap solution to clean the body.
This will depend on how often you use the robot lawn mower, the type of blades found on the device and on the manufacturer’s recommendations, so be sure to check the manual for the specific recommended period of time. However, as a general rule of thumb, we’d recommend changing the blades around every two months or so.
