Microsoft is about to quietly break one of its older Office releases on Mac. If you’re still using Office 2019, the change will be hard to ignore.

From July 13, Office 2019 for Mac will shift into what Microsoft calls “reduced functionality mode.” In practical terms, that means Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and OneNote will still open, but only in a very limited way. You’ll be able to view and print files. However, editing, saving or creating anything new will be blocked entirely.

The reason isn’t a dramatic feature cutoff or a new pricing push, but an expiring digital certificate tied to the software. Once that certificate lapses, the apps effectively lose the ability to function as full productivity tools.

It isn’t just Mac users either. iPhone and It also affects iPad users running Office 2019, along with some Microsoft 365 users on older setups. Microsoft says users can avoid the issue by updating to Microsoft 365 or Office 2021. However, this is assuming your device supports macOS 12 (Monterey) or iOS 17 and above.

But for Office 2019 users specifically, there isn’t much of a way around it. Microsoft ended support for the suite back in October 2023. This means no further updates are coming, and reinstalling won’t fix the certificate problem either.

The company’s recommended path forward is fairly predictable. You can move to a Microsoft 365 subscription, or buy a one-time licence for Office 2024. Alternatively, users can still access Word, Excel and PowerPoint through the browser for free. Though that obviously comes with limitations compared to desktop apps.

What makes this situation slightly more frustrating is that Microsoft set that expectation when it ended support in 2023. At the time, the company indicated Office 2019 would continue to function even without updates. Microsoft has since softened that assurance, with its recent wording focusing more on data safety than continued usability.

It’s a reminder that even “finished” software isn’t always static. In this case, a behind-the-scenes certificate expiring is enough to turn a full productivity suite into something closer to a document viewer. This is especially true on Mac and iOS, where the issue is specifically hitting users.

Windows and Android users will not be affected, and Microsoft will continue supporting Office 2021 until October 2026. But for anyone still relying on Office 2019 on Apple devices, the countdown effectively ends next month.
