Introduction

There’s no shortage of personal blenders, but the Ninja BlendBoss is genuinely different. With a 1100W motor, this blender can power through any kind of ingredient, producing perfectly smooth drinks to take on the go.

It helps that it’s also smart looking and doesn’t take up much space. If you want better drinks to take with you, this is brilliant.

Design and Features

• Looks great
• Simple to use
• Easy to clean

When my daughter saw the Ninja Blendboss I had on review, her first question was, “Can I have the cup?” Who can blame her? My fetching pink and green BlendBoss looks fantastic, and if you don’t like that combination, there are four other modes to choose from.

Rather than relying on a rechargeable battery, such as with the Ninja Blast Max, the BlendBoss needs to be plugged in. Don’t worry, it’s a marvel in compactness, with a tiny base that doesn’t take up much counter or cupboard space.

There’s a reassuring heft to the base, too, and that’s because inside there’s a very powerful 1100W motor. That kind of power lets this personal blender deal with anything at all.

To keep the blender in one location, the base has suckers that stick it to the counter. Everything you want to blend then needs to be placed in the 750ml cup, which actually has a mx fill of 650ml (22oz).

Measurements are neatly labelled on the outside of the cup, with a handy minimum fill level for liquids. It’s worth reading the excellent quick start guide, which tells you the order to put ingredients in for the best blending.

Once loaded up, the blades screw onto the cup, and then you invert the whole thing and lock it onto the base for blending.

Three automatic controls run through a programme automatically to get the results you’d want: blend iQ (for things like hummus), and the self-evident smoothie iQ and ice crush iQ. There’s also a Pulse button so that you can give ingredients an extra swirl on-demand.

Once done, the cup comes off, the blades come off and the straw can be put into the cup, and the travel lid secured, and off you go, simple as that.

Ninja recommends cleaning the blade holder within an hour of use, and you can do this by handwashing or putting it on the top rack of a dishwasher. Likewise, the cup can be handwashed or cleaned on a dishwasher’s top rack.

Performance

• Very powerful
• Makes incredibly smooth smoothies
• Loud

To see what that 1100W motor can do, I started by filling the BlendBoss with ice and using the ice crush iQ setting. This ran through a series of blends and pauses, turning the ice from solids into the finest powder that I’ve seen from a personal blender.

It’s hugely impressive, and if the BlendBoss can cope with hard chunks of ice like this, it can reasonably cope with anything.

I then moved on to the next test, my smoothie, which I used the smoothie IQ setting for. For this, I use a combination of ingredients to see how well a blender works. There’s ice in there to help cool the drink; pineapple, including the core, for a tougher blending test; coconut milk and yoghurt for liquid; and coconut flakes and mint leaves to give it something smaller to deal with.

Typically, a personal blender, like the Blast Max, can cope with this mix of ingredients, but there will be fine bits of coconut and mint leaves in the drink. With the BlendBoss, it blitzed everything into a perfectly smooth drink, and it’s the best that I’ve ever had from any blender, hands-down.
And, it can make larger drinks than a lot of personal blenders; the Blast Max, for example, can make 400ml maximum.

The downside of this blender is that it’s really loud: it peaked at 93.9dB, which is super loud. I tend to load it up, hit the button and step aside while it does its job, but this isn’t the kind of tool you’d want to use too early in the morning or too late at night.

Should you buy it?

You want smoothies on the go

If you want perfectly blended smoothies and want to take them with you, then the BlendBoss is excellent.

You want more versatility

If you need more capacity or a blender that can cope with different tasks, such as soup, look for a traditional model.

Final Thoughts

If you love smoothies and want to take your drink with you, the Ninja BlendBoss is brilliant: compact, very powerful and with a big capacity. It’s quite loud in use, but that aside, it makes the best smoothies that I’ve tasted.
