Repeated letters are quite common in the game, with 748 of the 2,309 Wordle answers containing one. However, it’s still more likely that a Wordle doesn’t have one.

Today’s Wordle answer (game #1345) is… OTTER.
Hands up if you love OTTERs? That’ll be all of you, then. And rightly so, because otters are great! We could surely all learn a lot from their playful nature (he says, working on a weekend), a love of fun that’s so ingrained in them that one of the collective nouns for otters is a “romp”. Wonderful. Although that said, otter attacks on humans are apparently increasing in Florida, where there have been 42 such instances since 2000. I’d never have predicted that!
Anyway, OTTER was also a lovely Wordle answer today. It may not look like one at first glance, because it has both a repeated letter and an ER ending, two factors usually guaranteed to spell danger. Here, however, it was de-clawed, with WordleBot reporting that it has an average score of 4.0. That’s slightly higher than the norm, sure, but hardly in keeping for an ER-with-a-repeat.
Admittedly, that average may be skewed by the fact that STARE, still one of the most popular among the best Wordle start words, left only four possible solutions today, with ETHER, UTTER and OTHER being the, er, others.
Given that all three are past Wordle answers, anyone who consulted the list – or who has an extremely good memory – will have scored a two here.
STARE acolytes aside, it’s probably on the easier side of hard, if that makes sense. All five letters (or rather, four letters) are very common, and the format here prevents the ER aspect from doing its usual damage. That’s because there are not that many letters that can follow an O at the start of an answer, still fewer that can go between O and T, or T and E.
In fact, once you had the O and had established that it wasn’t the second letter – where it would play a part in many, many more solutions, such as BOXER, CORER, LOSER and so on – you will have had a fairly short shortlist.
That was exactly the result that fate bestowed upon me today. I began with HOVER, chosen as always at random, but today supremely suited to the task. It didn’t perform quite so well as STARE, but it cut my options to nine, an entirely manageable number.
I didn’t quite find them all, with OILER and OGLER escaping my gaze, but did come up with OFFER, OWNER, OUTER, OLDER, ORDER, ODDER and OTTER. And I worked out that playing ADULT would almost guarantee me a three; there was a chance I’d still have a 50/50, but there was a greater likelihood it would point me to the solution.
As it happened, I got lucky. ADULT gave me a yellow T, and coupled with the fact that D, U and L were ruled out, that left OTTER as the only possible answer.

Yesterday’s Wordle hints (game #1344)
In a different time zone where it’s still Saturday? Don’t worry – I can give you some clues for Wordle #1344, too.

Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #1344) was… CREAM.
Well, this was annoying! For me at least – for some readers it may have been a very good day…
That’s because CREAM was my randomly chosen start word on Friday, meaning I missed out on a fabled first-guess-solve by a whisker.
However, I know that there are a few folk out there who play my start word the day after I do – so they will be very happy with this one.
CREAM is an easy Wordle whatever your start word. It has an average score of 3.2, making it the third super-simple game in six days, following TRAIL (3.2) and ROACH (also 3.3). The fact that I needed four guesses to solve it was down to my opening JOIST – so maybe my start word comment above needs a caveat for those of you who were very unlucky – but my streak was never in doubt even so.
WordleBot, meanwhile, scored a two – and I imagine plenty of others will have done so too, given that several of the best Wordle start words left only a handful of options.
CRANE, the ‘Bot’s choice, was at three, along with CRATE, while TRACE (4) was another good one.
JOIST was not in that category: it gave me no yellows or greens and left 761 possible solutions.
I didn’t think too hard about my second guess, but simply arranged the most common remaining letters into a word: LEARN. WordleBot said it would have chosen the exact same thing, but it was incredibly unlucky and still left 57 options despite giving me three yellows.
With yellow E and R still in play, I figured I should rule out the dreaded ER words and went with PACER. This gave me yet another yellow, but still no greens. On the plus side, it now cut my options to three.
At this stage I stopped to identify which words were actually still left to me, and came up with CREAM, CREMA and CREAK. Playing CREAM was the obvious choice, because it would guarantee me a five at worst, whereas CREAK could have left me with a 50/50 and a possible six. CREAM also seemed more likely than CREMA.
So I went with that and scored a below-par but acceptable four – while rueing my luck that it wasn’t a one.

What is Wordle?
If you’re on this page then you almost certainly know what Wordle is already, and indeed have probably been playing it for a while. And even if you’ve not been playing it, you must surely have heard of it by now, because it’s the viral word game phenomenon that took the world by storm last year and is still going strong in 2024.
We’ve got a full guide to the game in our What is Wordle page, but if you just want a refresher then here are the basics.
What is Wordle?
Wordle challenges you to guess a new five-letter word each day. You get six guesses, with each one revealing a little more information. If one of the letters in your guess is in the answer and in the right place, it turns green. If it’s in the answer but in the wrong place, it turns yellow. And if it’s not in the answer at all it turns gray. Simple, eh?
It’s played online via the Wordle website or the New York Times’ Crossword app (iOS / Android), and is entirely free.
Crucially, the answer is the same for everyone each day, meaning that you’re competing against the rest of the world, rather than just against yourself or the game. The puzzle then resets each day at midnight in your local time, giving you a new challenge, and the chance to extend your streak.
What are the Wordle rules?
The rules of Wordle are pretty straightforward, but with a couple of curveballs thrown in for good measure.
1. Letters that are in the answer and in the right place turn green.
2. Letters that are in the answer but in the wrong place turn yellow.
3. Letters that are not in the answer turn gray.
4. Answers are never plural.
5. Letters can appear more than once. So if your guess includes two of one letter, they may both turn yellow, both turn green, or one could be yellow and the other green.
6. Each guess must be a valid word in Wordle’s dictionary. You can’t guess ABCDE, for instance.
7. You do not have to include correct letters in subsequent guesses unless you play on Hard mode.
8. You have six guesses to solve the Wordle.
9. You must complete the daily Wordle before midnight in your timezone.
10. All answers are drawn from Wordle’s list of 2,309 solutions. However…
11. Wordle will accept a wider pool of words as guesses – some 10,000 of them. For instance, you can guess a plural such as WORDS. It definitely won’t be right (see point 4 above), but Wordle will accept it as a guess.
